Taste Testing: Steel Cut Oats

"A simple enough pleasure, surely, to have breakfast alone with one's husband, but how seldom married people in the midst of life achieve it."
Anne Spencer Morrow Lindbergh

In the nutrition-focused month of January, consumption of healthy breakfasts surely increases.  My favorite hearty morning food is steel cut oatmeal.  While the slow cook version of these delicious nutty oats require nearly an hour of preparation time, Trader Joe's has come to the rescue yet again and offered us their frozen "Steel Cut Oatmeal."
These little frozen bundles of oats arrive with just a touch of maple sugar and cinnamon.  But eating boring ole' oats is simply not a thrill, so I've started to add all sorts of creative little toppings to make the morning meal more satisfying for the eye and the palate.
Trader Joe's also sells a packet of diced dried mangos, cranberries and blueberries which makes the perfect topper for the oatmeal.  Along with a fresh banana and a drizzle of cream, this breakfast becomes simply divine.

Your momma always told you breakfast was the most important meal of the day.  So, start the day out right and indulge in these deceptively delish steel cut oats.

  1. Pink Frenchie,
I first fell in love with steelcut oats in Ireland. Slow cooked is so much tastier.

I'll look for the frozen version at Trader Joe's and indulge in a hot breakfast and these still cold California mornings.
