Words to Live by: On Contentment

“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” -Epicurious
Well, hello, my long lost readers.  I apologize for my lack of posts in recent weeks.  A combination of pregnancy anxiety and work woes has left me with a wicked case of writer's block and ennui. But, I'm back for now, even if sporadically.

As I enter this new phase of my life, the motherhood phase, I've been engaged in some serious contemplation, even waxing philosophical at times (or maybe I'm just listening to too much Adele?).  What kind of mother will I be?  How will my life change? What hopes do I have for my future and for my child's future?
Ultimately, I keep reaching the same conclusion.  All I can really ask for is contentment.  I think too often, especially for those of us who dwell in the la-la land that is Southern California, we strive for what's next: what's bigger, grander, more impressive than what we already have, do or need.
My husband and I rent a relatively small apartment.  We both drive older cars.  We don't have the latest and greatest gadgets or the fanciest name brand attire.  But, we have exactly what we need.  And, most importantly, we are happy.  While our society generally commends upward mobility and striving for success, I think that at times, being content with here and now brings richer rewards.
Sure, there are redeeming qualities in always reaching for what's beyond our grasp, but in this moment, I want to remind you (and me) that sometimes we just need to be grateful for all that we have.
