Taste Testing: Giada's Sauce

I'm sure you've been seeing Giada's smiling face all over Target commercials lately.  Honestly, when I noticed her new line of products on store shelves, I thought she was a bit of a sell-out.  How many celebrity chefs do we really need to pimp their own products?  How good can this stuff really be?

Then I noted that Giada's own red sauce was only around $2.50 a jar, low by even Prego or Ragu standards. I decided to give it a go.

On this particular evening, we sampled Giada's creamy tomato sauce.  You should know that I always "fortify" my jarred sauces with one sautéed onion, one crushed garlic clove, a splash of balsamic vinegar, a touch of cream, a sprinkling of oregano and red pepper flakes---somehow that combination of flavors tends to take the "jar" flavor away.  I also added one pound of lean ground beef to the sauce.

Based on my hubby's silence during dinner and the nonexistent leftovers, I'd say Giada's sauce was a success.  Often jarred sauces are too sugary or too runny.  This sauce seemed as though I had labored over it all day.  Mama mia!!

So, next time you need a quick weeknight pasta dinner, ask Giada for a little help.  Grazie mille, Giada!

  1. What a great sauce! I cooked up her Target Creamy Tomato Sauce and Target Spaghetti and it was amazing. The creamy tomato sauce has mascapone cheese which really added a lot of flavor and the spaghetti has a rough texture which seems to help the sauce really stick to it.

I blogged about it at http://ilovetargetstores.blogspot.com/2010/08/giada-de-laurentiis-interview-and.html
