Peaches and Cream

One of my favorite breakfasts as a little girl was an instant pack of "Peaches and Cream" Quaker oatmeal.  There were neither peaches nor cream in those little paper packets, but the result was something that warmed my belly and readied me for a long day ahead.
Now, when I want to relive that simple pleasure of a childhood morning, I make my own version of peaches and cream oatmeal.
Trader Joe's quick cook steel cut oats are the perfect canvas for a hearty and creamy breakfast.  I make my oatmeal with milk (also divine with coconut milk). Then to really Paula Deen-afy it, I add a thin, little sliver of butter.  I know, you're thinking why even bother eating heart healthy oatmeal with butter?  Well, dearies, you clearly haven't tried it this way.  Even the smallest bit of butter adds a complexity and richness that will have you craving this for breakfast on every day that ends in "y."

I top my delish porridge with fresh diced peaches (the Saturn or Donut peaches are a sweet summer favorite of mine), sliced bananas, a sprinkling of shredded coconut, brown sugar...and a drizzle of half and half.  Over the top? Perhaps.  But I figure starting the day with something yummy and wonderful will get me on the right foot. "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper," as the saying goes!

What is your favorite childhood breakfast?  (It's okay if you say cinnamon rolls from a can or cocoa krispies.  No judgement from instant oatmeal-lovin' moi.)

  1. Dear Pink Frenchie,

A friend of mine just returned from a trip to Ireland and tells me the Irish add a bit of whiskey to their steel-cut oatmeal. Hmmm . . . Perhaps because it's sooo cold and rainy most mornings? You must try it and tell us.
