Sugar & Spice

“This is my invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook- try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun!”
― Julia ChildMy Life in France

My dad is the culinary expert in my family.  He is a fearless cook who leads with instinct rather than recipes.  In my thirty years as his daughter, I can only think of one time when I didn't love what he served (the infamous puréed tuna Niçoise of 1997).  Generally though, when I'm stumped in the kitchen, I call dad.  He always know exactly what to do.  What should I add to this chicken dish?  Which herb suits sautéd green beens?  What is the perfect way to poach an egg?

One of my dad's finest foodie discoveries is Penzeys.  Both an online and a retail spice shop, Penzeys' herbs and spices are my favorite.  From regular ole' cinnamon to exotic curry blends or Mexican vanilla beans, Penzeys selection is unparalleled.  And, if you're like me, and you don't even know what you need, they have variety packs and samplers.
My favorite selections from Penzeys
Aside from the usual pantry staples, I adore Penzeys 4/S Season Salt, Bavarian Seasoning, Cajun Seasoning, Sweet Curry Powder, Maharajah Curry Powder  and Bouquet Garni.

Even if you don't mix up your culinary repertoire, adding in a new spice can certainly jazz up an ordinary dish.  Variety, as they say, is the spice of life.  Bon appétit, mes amis!

  1. As a foodie with a love of the exotic, I thank you for the tip.

Whenever I travel, a must is always the local markets such as the one in your first photo. I love the scents but also the colorful visual feast of mountains of herbs, chilies and spices.
